Yardage
The total number of yards gained or lost by a team during a game is referred to as “yardage” in American football. In American football, a yard is a unit of measurement, and the field is marked with yard lines at five-yard intervals. The offensive team’s goal is to progress the ball down the field as much as possible to reach the end zone and score points, while the defensive team’s goal is to prevent the offensive team from gaining yardage and scoring.
Yardage is used to measure the progress of an offensive team’s drive and is important in deciding several facets of the game, including:
First Downs: To earn a fresh set of four downs, an attacking team must achieve 10 yards in four downs (or attempts). If they do this, it is called a “first down.”
Touchdowns, field goals, and safeties are scored based on how far the offence pushes the ball into the opposing end zone or through the uprights.
Yardage gained or lost may have a substantial influence on a team’s field position. A team with a strong field position must travel less distance to score, whereas a team with a poor field position must go more distance.
Individual and team statistics, including running yards, passing yards, and total offence, are also tracked using yardage.
In American football, yards can be acquired through various methods, including rushing plays, passing plays, and special teams plays (such as kick and punt returns). In contrast, a team can lose yards due to quarterback sacks, tackles for loss, or penalties that cause the team to lose ground.
Accumulating positive yardage is an important part of good offensive play since it gets the team closer to scoring chances and helps control the game’s flow. Preventing the opposition team from gaining yardage is critical in defence for forcing punts, producing turnovers, and reducing the opponent’s scoring potential.
