What is considered an audible?
Audible occurs when the quarterback calls a new play at the line of scrimmage, which is different than the play called in the huddle, after surveying the defense.
Quarterbacks have a tremendous amount of responsibility in the game of football, and one of those responsibilities includes reading defenses. A quarterback will analyze the defense before snapping the ball and if he feels that the defense has an advantage over the play that was originally called in the huddle, he will change the play with an audible. It is then that he will call out a play to his players along the line of scrimmage, wide receivers and backfield. This is done both vocally and sometimes with hand signals.
The original meaning for audible basically means “to be heard or capable of being heard”. This translates over to football as when the quarterback decides to change the play at the line, they must shout the new play and instructions to all his teammates, so in essence, the quarterback must “be heard” if the players all want to be on the same page regarding the new play.
For example, if a quarterback receives the call to execute a running play, but he notices that the defense is ready to blitz — that is, to send additional defensive backs across the line of scrimmage in an attempt to tackle the quarterback or short his ability to pass — the quarterback may want to change the play. To do this, the quarterback yells a special code, like “Blue 42”, or “Texas 29”, which tells the offense to switch to a specific play or formation, but it all depends on the quarterback’s judgment of the defense’s alignment. The offensive players know what this means — a bubble screen to the running back. The ball is snapped and the offensive team runs a screen, thwarting the blitz of the defensive side.
Examples of how Audible is used in commentary:
- Manning comes to the line, notices a change in the defense and immediately calls an audible.
- Manning goes under center and sees that the defense is set to drop back into zone, therefore audibles to a running play.
