How to understand “cup tie”?
What does the football term “cup tied” mean?
Cup tie is used as an adjective to describe a player who cannot play in a cup competition. The reason the player cannot play, or is cup tied, is because they have played in the competition for another club and cannot play in the same competition for their new club – they are cup tied.
Example: (Liverpool’s) Jordon Ibe is cup-tied meaning the 18-year-old will be denied a third successive start in the FA Cup and a space will open at wing-back.
