What is the term “One-on-one” for in football?

One-on-one refers to a situation wherein a player has a face-off with the opposing team’s goalkeeper before they can make a goal. To get this kind of opportunity lasts for a few seconds. Hence, it is important that once the player is provided with this chance, they should do the best of their ability to be able to score a goal before the defensive players of the opposing team can start building up their defense walls.

When playing football, it is all about the right coordination and timing. Having a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper before you can make that goal is just a small window of opportunity. If you play it right, you might be able to score a goal. However, if you miss that chance of making a goal, it would mean that you will have to start at the beginning as the defense players start building up their defense system.

Another opportunity when a one-on-one situation is presented is during a free-kick, wherein a player has the chance to score a goal without any defense players running towards them to try and take the ball. This free-kick is often awarded if a player of the opposing team has committed a penalty. In this situation, the player needs to carefully calculate where they want the ball to go before the goalkeeper catches it, thus missing your chance to score.

Any football player had probably experienced being awarded a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper during a free-kick. To successfully make a goal, players are trained to have a face-off match with their goalkeeper during exercise drills. This training is to ensure that the players can master which side of the ball they should kick for it to go inside the goal in a smooth motion.

The one-on-one training helps the player to practice kicking the ball, especially when they are under pressure. When an opportunity is given for a free-kick, any player is pressured to score a goal given that no other players are obstructing their view of the goal, except that of the goalkeeper. By doing this exercise, the player can practice kicking the ball and get used to the idea in case a similar opportunity presents itself.
