Passive Offside

How to understand the football expression “passive offside”?

What is passive offside?

What is meant by passive offside in football?

Passive offside is the exception to the offside rule, as stated by the International Football Association Board in their Laws of the Game. This rule allows the game to continue if the player who is in an offside position does not show any attempt to involve themselves in the game. Instead, the player who is on the offside allows the player onside to take control of the ball.

There are cases where a player sometimes manipulates other the players of the opposing team and put them in a trap prohibiting them from making any advances — this is where the difference between passive offside and the offside offense takes into place.

Passive offside does not involve itself in the game if the opponent is in an offside position by allowing the other player to take control of the ball. In this case, the player will not get penalized. However, for offside offense, if the player interferes with the play of the player from the other team that is already in an offside position, they will get penalized. An offside offense is committed when the player prevents the opponent from playing the ball or hindering the line of vision of the opponent. This is an obvious attempt to affect the opponent’s ability to play the ball.

Passive offside works by not stopping the other player from playing the ball when they are in an offside position. The law states that if any player attempts to take the ball from the other player when they are already in an offside position, they get penalized. This rule has invoked many complaints as not being fair. It mainly allows the player on the offside position to continue playing as there will be no attempts from the other team to take possession of the ball for fear of being sanctioned.

It’s also allowed for several players to take advantage of this rule and use it to create an opportunity to score a goal. To prevent this from happening, some players are willing to take the risk of getting cautioned, just so the other team cannot use it to their benefit.
