Phantom goal
What does the football term “phantom goal” mean?
How to understand a “phantom goal” in football?
What is considered a phantom goal?
Phantom goal (or a ghost goal) is a term used in soccer that describes a questionable and uncertain decision on whether or not a goal was scored in a soccer match. A phantom goal can be awarded to a team, even if the ball never crossed the goal line. On the other hand, a goal can cross the goal line, but if the referee never sees the ball cross the goal line, the team is not awarded the goal.
Examples of how Phantom goal is used in commentary:
The goalkeeper makes the save and stops the ball right in front of the goal line, due to the referee’s line of sight; they award the team the goal, saying it crossed the line. Replays show that the ball did in fact not cross the line, granting the team a classic example of a phantom goal.
