Retired Numbers
What does the football term “retired numbers” mean?
How to understand “retired numbers” in football?
What is considered a retired number?
The term “Retired Numbers” are referred to those squad numbers that a football team or a football club no longer use in honour of a legend of that team or club who had earlier played in that shirt number. A club retired a certain number in the squad after the player wearing that particular number retires and in some cases passes away. This is done so as a mark of respect and tribute to the player. After the club retires that number, no player is supposed to wear that number again.
Such an honor may also be bestowed on players who had highly memorable careers, died prematurely under tragic circumstances, or have had their promising careers ended by serious injury.
