Studs
What is called “studs” in football?
What types of studs exist?
What studs are made of?
Studs are the small points that are located on the external bottom part of a football player’s shoes. These are placed on the shoes to prevent the player from slipping and are also commonly known as, “cleats”.
These studs can be blade-like or conical in shape and can be made out of metal, rubber, or plastic. The kind or type of studs a player uses usually depends on the kind of field or the environment of play, whether it be artificial turf, ice, grass, or other grounds.
Shoes with studs are not unique to football. There are other sports that use these kinds of shoes for better performance including American football, Australian football and baseball as well as lacrosse, golf, and rugby. Even cyclists use shoes with specialized studs.
There are different types when it comes to studs used in football. These types depend on the kind of field or ground being used for play. There are studs that are used for firm grounds and there are also those that are used for artificial grounds. In addition, there are shoes that come with detachable ones.
Firm-ground studs are those which are made for use on grass or dirt. These are large ones that used to assist in quick directional changes as well as to prevent sliding and reinforce gripping. There are three types used for firm grounds and these are the bladed, hard ground, and round. The round ones are mostly made out of metal and are considered illegal in some sports.
There are also those shoes with studs that are used for artificial grounds. The studs are made out of rubber and are like medium bumps that help in gripping flat artificial turf. The studs are very durable and are considered as more of an extension to the external soles rather than an addition.
Last but not the least type of studs are the detachable ones. These are the ones that are removable and are perfect for soft or muddy grounds. This type is usually made from metal and comes with varying lengths. The studs that are detachable are longer than the traditional ones and are built to create a better foothold. It comes with a more aggressive shape and increased length, which allows a player to get enough grip on muddy and slippery surfaces.
