Other information

National Sports Complex Olympiyskiy in Kiev is a multifunctional arena for a wide variety of sports and other cultural events. Dynamo Kiev football club, as well as the country’s national football team, conducts training and home meetings on the football field of the complex.

The construction of the stadium, which is now called the Olympic, was planned back in 1914. However, work was not started due to the outbreak of World War I. After the Bolsheviks came to power, the question of the need to build new sports facility was raised again in Kiev. It opened on August 12, 1923 on the site of the Alexander Park. At that time, the stadium was named after Leon Trotsky.

The first reconstruction of the stadium began in 1936, after Kiev became the capital of the Ukrainian SSR. The number of seats was increased to 50,000. However, the opening of the updated stadium, scheduled for June 22, 1941, did not take place due to the outbreak of World War II. Interesting, the occupation did not prevent the holding of sports events in the arena. The first match took place on July 12, 1942.

After the war, the stadium was reconstructed more than once. The most significant of them were:

  • from 1966 to 1967;
  • from 1977 to 1980 (in preparation for the 1980 Olympic Games, which took place in Moscow);
  • from 1992 to 1999;
  • from 2008 to 2011

After the last mentioned reconstruction, the stadium received the highest UEFA status. The grand opening of the arena took place on October 8, 2011, and the first football match almost a month later — on November 11, 2011. The national teams of Ukraine and Germany met on the field in a friendly game, and 70,000 fans gathered in the stands. The match ended in a draw — 3:3.

The stadium field has standard dimensions — 105*68 m. The lawn of the NSC Olympiyskiy football field is natural. The field is surrounded by stands, all places of which are covered by a membrane roof. The arena has two displays measuring 13.6*7.6 m, which display both graphic and video information about what is happening on the field. Field illumination is carried out using 608 floodlights operating in 7 modes. As a result, the illumination of the arena can vary from 1000 to 2400 lux.

Euro 2012 matches were held at the NSC Olympiyskiy football arena. At the group stage, the teams of group D played here:

  • June 11, 2012 Ukraine — Sweden, 2:1;
  • June 15, 2012 Sweden — England, 2:3;
  • June 19, 2012 Sweden — France, 2:0.

One of the quarter-final matches took place here: June 24, 2012, England — Italy, 0-0 (2:4 in the penalty shootout), as well as the final match between Spain and Italy. The score was 4:0 in favor of the Spanish team.

On May 26, 2018, the final of the UEFA Champions League was held on the NSC Olympiyskiy field. Football players from Real Madrid (Spain) and Liverpool (England) entered the field of the Kiev stadium. In this match, Real won 3:1.

In addition to the football matches in the arena of NSC Olympiyskiy other important cultural events were and are held.

During its existence, the Olympiyskiy stadium has overgrown with many legends. One of them is the legend of the Bessarabian gate. It is believed that if in the first half the local team defends the goal located on the side of Bessarabska Square, then it will be lucky.
