The stadium “Nizhny Novgorod” boasts an extremely convenient location. That is why the fans will have absolutely no difficulty getting here practically from anywhere in the city by various means of transport.

If you had been moving under the arches of the new arena on the metro earlier, then you would have had to leave at the Moskovskaya station, from where it was an unhurried step to the stadium about a half hour walk. However, specifically for the World Cup, the city authorities extended the blue line (Sormovsko-Meshcherskaya line) and opened a new metro station, whose name is Strelka, the trip to the Nizhny Novgorod stadium from here takes no more than 15 minutes.

If you prefer ground modes of transport, then getting to Nizhny Novgorod will also not be difficult. Buses of city lines No. 7, 41, 57, 66, 69 will take you here without any problems — you will need to get off at the Sed’moye Nebo stop on Karl Marx Street, from where it is 500 meters to the arena. Bus number 52 is relevant if you get off at the Betankura Street stop (650 meters to the stadium).

At the same stopping points, it is worth braking one of the following fixed-route taxis, which are designed to help fans get to the stadium with comfort: 18, T24, 39, 49, 67, 70 (T7), 86, T24, T138.

Stadium Facts

Initially, the stadium in Nizhny Novgorod was planned to give the uncomplicated name “Volga Arena”, but at the insistence of FIFA this version was not accepted. Local fans were also opposed, who believed that a new stadium with that name would not say anything to foreign guests about the city: in fact, Nizhny Novgorod — only “one of”, that is, many football arenas were built on the banks of the Volga (just recall Volgograd at least).

The stadium was erected at the place where two large rivers merge: the Volga and its tributary of the Oka. Nizhny Novgorod nicknamed him “Arrow”. In honor of this, the metro station of the same name, built specifically for the 2018 World Cup, was named on the blue metro line. It is worth noting that next to “Nizhny Novgorod” is one of the main sacred sights of the city – Alexander Nevsky.

Without exception, all objects in the vicinity of this sports facility are lower in height — among the arenas that hosted the World Cup matches, the stadium in Nizhny Novgorod is one such.

Like many other football stadiums of the World Cup in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod has repeatedly increased in price. The initial estimate assumed construction costs of 11 billion rubles. Later, the figure rose to 13 billion. Then, when the economic crisis ensued, which led to a drop in the ruble, the cost of this sports facility increased. The stadium has already been opened, all the matches of the world football championship have been played at it, but one fact is still unknown: how much as a result of the federal and regional budget was spent on the construction of the Nizhny Novgorod stadium. According to some sources, this amount is estimated at 17.2billion rubles, according to others — 17.9.

The key architectural solution of the stadium in Nizhny Novgorod is a trihedral colonnade around the entire circumference of the structure with lighting. The canopy visor covering the stands is made of metal structures supported by columns. As a result, the arena turns out to be open, and the roof hangs over the stands, from which a view of the confluence of two rivers also opens. The stands are closed and have a wavy shape, towering at central points. The entire stadium is made in white and blue colors — this gamut fully reflects the features of the local Volga landscapes (blue color — rivers, white — beaches and sand dunes located in the vicinity of Nizhny Novgorod).

Outside, the stadium is covered by a specially designed membrane. It not only provides the comfort of the audience, but also symbolizes the water and the wind, emphasizing that the arena is located on the banks of the Volga.

At the very beginning, the Nizhny Novgorod stadium was planned to be created in the area of the village of Olgino on the southwestern outskirts of the city, but this decision of the then governor of the region caused a wide public outcry. There was a wave of protests and a large number of letters addressed to the head of the region with an urgent request to review the decision. At that moment a hitch arose; since it was not possible to reach a consensus, and the construction deadlines were already running out, FIFA intervened, having said its last word — so “Nizhny Novgorod” received its registration at the arrow of the Oka and Volga.

According to the results of the award “Sports Facilities. Results of the year” the project of the Nizhny Novgorod stadium was recognized by the vast majority of experts as the best among all the arena projects of the World Cup-2018.

At the grand opening of the stadium, the famous Russian musical group Uma Thurman performed, specially for the tournament, recorded a new song dedicated to his native Nizhny Novgorod. The FIFA Commissioner, seeing the stadium in Nizhny Novgorod, exclaimed: The best!

The total weight of the roofing metal structures used in the construction of Nizhny Novgorod is 10 thousand tons — the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris weighs about the same.

In 2017, an emergency occurred at the stadium — a fire occurred in broad daylight. Of course, it was quickly liquidated enough, but this news flashed like lightning over not only the Russian but also the foreign media, generating even more rumors that it would be unsafe at the World Cup in Russia. By the way, the fire was not the most acute problem during the construction of the Nizhny Novgorod arena. It gained notoriety and due to strikes of workers who were not paid wages for 3 months.

Field of Nizhny Novgorod

The organization of the football pitch at the Nizhny Novgorod stadium was carried out by the Procyon organization, which mainly employs golf and luxury real estate professionals. They brought in the lawn for this 2018 World Cup arena from Scotland.

The field is equipped with the most advanced drainage, irrigation and heating systems. To maintain a positive temperature in the root zone, more than 30 kilometers of pipes were laid under the base of the field. This will protect the lawn from frost and conduct matches on it at low temperatures.

Stadium stands and infrastructure

The main feature of the plastic seats on “Nizhny Novgorod” is their triple mount when mounted in reinforced concrete — this option is able to keep the seats for the audience safe and sound even if they are tried to tear out especially hot fans. Armchairs at the stadium are in two colors — white and blue.

FIFA standards require the creation of stadiums of this level of special comfort for VIP guests. So, on “Nizhny Novgorod” in sector A comfortable chairs with soft pillows and armrests are installed. On two floors of the stadium — more than 40 skyboxes for large companies and corporate clients, and on the third level — the CSO zone (abbreviation for a special state facility). In a word, the third level and CSO are for governors, ministers, and also the President of Russia if he decides to attend a football match. In the CSO zone there are facilities for staff and doctors, a relaxation room and much more. Next to the CSO are two more rooms for VIPs (the president of FIFA, for example) with soft sofas, separate bathrooms, a bar and other amenities.

Under the vaults of Nizhny Novgorod, food courts with bar counters, tables, catering units, and kitchens are equipped around the entire perimeter of the arena. There is a mixed zone for short interviews with players and coaches during the break or after the match, relaxation rooms, changing rooms and showers for ball games are equipped. Press conferences before and after the games are held in an ultramodern conference room, where five booths for translators are equipped.

Around the stadium — lawns, benches, tennis courts, parking, and on the north-western side — a field for mini-football. Also, in the vicinity of the stadium, the embankment was restored, and the park was ennobled: this place has already gained popularity among local residents who prefer to spend leisure time here.
