On One’s Racket
How to understand the tennis expression “on one’s racket”?
What is meant by an “on one’s racket” in tennis?
When does an on one’s racket occur?
“On One’s Racket” in professional tennis refers to the situation when one player wins over their opponent in a match, set or tie by holding a serve. An on one’s racket occurs when the player breaks the holding serve or is able to achieve a mini break in a tiebreak match. A mini break is achieved when a player wins a point from an opponent’s serve. The term is both used in tiebreak matches as well as normal service games. In a “up a mini break” situation, the player is able to earn two game points from their opponents serve.
Winning During Tiebreak Matches
During a tiebreak match, the first player to be able to reach seven points wins the tiebreaker game as well as the set. During this match, the player whose turn to serve is the first one who serves for the tiebreak. The next two points are served by the opponent and then rotates after every two further points. Tiebreakers can be played in all sets except for the last one – the third set in a women’s tennis match and the fifth set in a men’s tennis set. When a ball is returned by the opponent to the server and the player earns a point during a tiebreak match, it is referred to as one’s racket.
Ace Serves and Scoring Points in Tennis
A serve marks the start of a tennis match. It is also a shot of the player to earn a point. To execute a serve properly, the ball should be able to fall into the opposite diagonal side of the opponent’s court area immediately after the ball is hit by the racket. Serves are usually executed by tossing the ball high into the air and hitting it, usually when the ball is at the highest point of the toss. In a tiebreaker game, if a point is earned by the player that is at the receiving end of a serve, it is called an on one’s racket. Hitting a serve and earning a point after doing so is called an ace.
