Pre-Match Withdrawal
How to understand a “pre-match withdrawal” in tennis?
When does a pre-match withdrawal occur?
What is the procedure in the event of a withdrawal?
A withdrawal occurs when a player decides not to play all matches in an event. A withdrawal occurs only before (or during the warm-up for) a player’s first match in an event. If the Withdrawal occurs before entries close, the Withdrawal may be for any reason.
A withdrawal takes place in the event of injury, illness, personal emergency, or another bona fide reason. The Referee shall record the opponent as receiving a withdrawal, and the Referee shall write the reason for the withdrawal on the draw.
The following codes are used by the TDM system to record withdrawals.
- Illness………………….Wd(ill);
- Injury…………………. WD (inj);
- Emergency………….. Wd (em);
- Tournament administrative error )….Wd (tae) (e.g., tournament entered player in the wrong event);
- Double withdrawal….Wd/Wd.
To withdraw a player from a tournament once registered, the Tournament Director can either not select that that player in Selections or can manually withdraw the player.
Note: A player can withdraw themselves from the tournament prior to the registration close date. If the registration close date has passed, they can request a withdrawal and the TD will receive an email for the withdrawal request.
Withdrawing a player prior to player selection will be done within the Serve Tennis Admin Page, the player may also withdraw themselves from their USTA Profile.
Withdrawing a player can take place at many stages – we have provided the steps below based on a number of scenarios:
- Withdrawal before the player selections is completed.
- Withdrawing a player after player Selection but before play has started.
- Withdrawing on the day and match has started.
