Odds: types and differences

If you are a beginner bettor, then you had 100% of it when you visited the site of a foreign bookmaker and did not understand what the coefficients offered by the service were.  There is nothing surprising here, because these very coefficients can be different. Yes, they can have different forms.  But what are the coefficients, we will consider in this article.

It so happened that in bookmakers located in different parts of the world, you can find different types of coefficients.  There are several of them, but only three are very popular.  Let’s talk about them in more detail.

Decimal or European coefficients

So, the first kind of coefficients are decimal or European.  A good half of people who bet on the territory of the whole of Eurasia do not even suspect that there is some other kind of coefficients, except for decimal ones.  Moreover, they do not even know this name.  This type of coefficients is also common in Australia and Canada.

European coefficients are inversely proportional to the probability of occurrence of an event.  For example, if this probability is 50%, then the coefficient will be 2. 0.  It’s simple – 100% / 50% = 2. 0.  Elementary mathematics.

Why then, when the chances of winning each team are equal, we do not see the coefficients 2.0 – 2.0.  All because the bookmaker puts in margins put forward by himself.  But it has every value in every shop.

To calculate the amount of winnings that you can get in case you correctly predict the outcome, you need to multiply the coefficient by the bet amount.  That is, for example, you decided to put $ 1000 on a factor of 1. 8.  If the bet plays, your total winnings will be $ 1,800.  Therefore, the net winnings will be equal to the difference between the initial bet and the total winnings – $ 1800 – $ 1000 = $ 800.

But if with the European coefficients we are all familiar and there is no need to explain anything in detail, then some of us have never seen others.  Yes, here they are.

Fractional or English coefficients

This type of coefficients is the fraction of the net win sum.  As a rule, fractional coefficients are used in horse racing bets.  But some bookmakers offer this kind of coefficients to other sports.

How to calculate the gain from a fractional coefficient?

What is this “share of the amount” so incomprehensible? In fact, everything is simple.  To calculate your possible winnings, you first need to represent a simple fraction in the form of a decimal, and then add to it 1.  Consider the example.  Suppose we decided to make a bet of $ 100 for an event with a coefficient of 5/2.  How much will we win if the bet plays? First, imagine a simple fraction of 5/2 in the form of a decimal and get 5/2 = 2. 5.  Then we add 1 to the resulting number and get 2. 5 + 1 = 3. 5.  That is, if the $ 100 bet plays, the total winnings will be $ 350, and the net profit is $ 250.

One more example.  We make a bet of $ 50 per factor of 1/5.  The decimal fraction is equal to 1/5 = 0. 2.  And the overall coefficient is 0. 2 + 1 = 1. 2.  The sum of our total winnings is $ 60, and the net profit is $ 10.  Now it is clear? You see that 1/5 or 0. 2 points us to a net profit of $ 10 at a bet of $ 50? 50 * 0. 2 = 10.

Fractional coefficients can still be conditionally “called” by exact coefficients.  Why? They are convenient for people who make large bets.  For example, you decided to make a bet of $ 1000 per factor of 1/6.  What will your net profit amount to? 1000 * 1/6 = 1000 * 0. 1666 = 1000 * 1. 1666 = 1166. 6 – 1000 = 166. 6 dollars.

There is one interesting point that points out why the English coefficients are better for people playing on a large scale.  If the bookmaker exhibited a decimal coefficient for this event, it would look like 1. 16.  Therefore, at a bet of $ 1,000, the winning amount would be 1000 * 1. 16 = 1160 dollars.  Noticed? The net gain of the bettor was almost $ 7 less than in the case of a fractional coefficient.  And imagine, if we are talking about thousands of bets or about a bet of $ 100,000.  There are already quite different numbers.

US odds

The last kind of coefficients that we will consider is American.  These keks are displayed as whole or positive or negative numbers.  When there is a “+” sign in front of the number, it means that the net profit amount is greater than the bet.  And when there is a “-” sign in front of the number, the net profit amount, as you already understood, is less than the amount of the bet.

Probably, it is not clear? Let’s look at examples.  Here you have decided to make a bet of $ 100 to a coefficient of +110.  What will be your net profit? 110 dollars.  And this is the net profit, because the total winnings will be $ 100 + $ 110 = $ 210.

If the outcome odds is -110, then it indicates how much you need to put in order to win $ 100.  That is, putting 110 dollars on the outcome with a coefficient of -110, you win $ 100.  And the total amount of the win will be 110 + 100 = 210 dollars.

If for you the American coefficients are still incomprehensible and it’s hard for you to orient yourself in them, just translate them into European ones.

How does the American factor translate into decimal?

In the case of a positive coefficient, for example, +110, you need to nail 100 to it, and then divide it all into 100.  That is, (110 + 100) / 100 is 2. 1.  Here is our decimal coefficient for this outcome.

In the case of a negative American coefficient, for example, -110, it is necessary to add to the size of the coefficient 100, and then divide by the size of the coefficient.  That is, (110 + 100) /110=1. 90 is the desired decimal coefficient.

If you practice a little, then you will easily master this letter.  People who are used to making bets on such factors do not even think about what they need somewhere and for some reason to translate.  That is, they perceive these coefficients as they are.  For us, they look like a foreign language, which we do not fully know: first you need to read, and then translate to understand.

However, most offices do not force their clients to suffer.  If the bookmaker understands that he is often visited by clients from abroad, he, as a rule, provides several types of coefficients.  That is, on the site there is a switch with which you can choose the kind that is more convenient for you.
