Memphis Grizzlies vs. Houston Rockets is the first game of the 2024–25 NBA season. It will be a great Western Conference battle. Both teams want to make the playoffs. Memphis wants to get back on track after a season full of injuries in 2023–24, and Houston wants to build on the progress made last year under coach Ime Udoka.
For most of last season, star point guard Ja’ Morant missed the Grizzlies because he was suspended or hurt. Memphis hopes to score more and use the three-point line better now that Morant and Desmond Bane are fit. Zach Edey, a rookie, should help them defend and grab rebounds inside the paint. But Luke Kennard, Vince Williams Jr., and other important players are out.
Last season, young players like Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr. grew as Rockets players, largely thanks to coach Udoka. As a team, they have a great defense. They are ranked fifth in field goal defence and first in 3-point defence. Adding Reed Sheppard should help them hit better from outside and move the ball better. It will depend on game time and how center Steven Adams plays.
The Grizzlies are expected to win this game. Now that Morant is back and everyone is fit, Memphis should have the scoring edge. Houston’s strong defense could keep it close, but the Grizzlies should win because they are better on the wings and have more players inside. The Grizzlies win.
