The term “champ champ” was coined by Conor McGregor in 2016 and refers to the act of holding titles in two different divisions at the same time.
In December of 2015, Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo to win the Featherweight title. In late 2016, while still the Featherweight champion, McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 to win the Lightweight title. In the aftermath of this win, McGregor called himself the “champ champ”.
In the years since McGregor’s victory, the UFC has done more “superfights”, which has resulted in more “champ champs”. Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes and Henry Cejudo have all become “champ champs” since 2016.
It is nearly impossible to defend titles in two different divisions due to the difficulties of making weight. Most fighters will move up in weight to challenge for a title at a higher weight class, and this will make moving back down much harder.
Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier both gave up their titles at lower weight classes after moving up and winning at a heavier weight.
