A specific term that is used only in races, horse races to denote the length of the distance. For example, 12 furlongs equals a distance of 1.5 miles (2.4 + km). The minimum distance for the races is 5 furlongs (about 1 km), the maximum distance is 36 furlongs (4.5 miles or 7.2 + km).
Note that the furlongs are not used to indicate the distance over which the horses overtake each other. There are separate terms for this.
