Underdog

Underdog is a sportsman or a sports team that has a low chance of winning. The antonym of the term “favorite”.

Almost in any sporting event, a favorite (sportsman or team that has a great chance of winning) stands out and an outsider (a sportsman or team that has far less chance of success). Outsiders are usually called the word “underdog”. By the way, the term can refer not only to a separate match, but also to the season as a whole.

Let’s consider an example of a mural of a football match of “Host” – “Guests” with odds 1.2 – 5.0 – 9.5. Obviously, the hosts have great chances to win, which can be considered the favorite of the match. In this case, the guests are underdog.
